JJPL provides ongoing support, consultation and training in an effort to fortify the capacity of Louisianas juvenile public defenders and ensure that youth have informed and zealous lawyers to represent them.
- Consultation Services. If you are an attorney representing young people, or a parent or other concerned person, with questions about juvenile legal procedures or a case, JJPL senior attorneys welcome your calls and are available to strategize and discuss case specifics. Contact any of our senior attorneys by phone or at info@jjpl.org.
- Juvenile Appeals. JJPL handles juvenile appeals on a case-by-case basis pro bono. If you are an attorney representing young people and would like assistance filing an appeal, please contact info@jjpl.org.
- Post Disposition Representation (PDP). If you know of a child who is currently incarcerated in one of the youth prisons and should be eligible for an early release, please contact one of our PDP attorneys. See Post Disposition Project for more info.
- Resources & Sample Motions. JJPL has a library of legal resources, including juvenile treatises and handbooks, available for juvenile attorneys to review. If you are an attorney representing young people and would like a sample motion on a specific issue (i.e. motion to dismiss, motion to suppress, motion to challenge transfer, etc.), please contact any of our senior attorneys by phone or at info@jjpl.org. See Pleadings And Legal Material for select sample motions.
- Juvenile Defender Training. JJPL has been coordinating the juvenile defender track of the Public Defender Association annual fall training for the past 3 years, and is available to continue to do so. Materials and sample motions from previous trainings are available upon request; please contact Gabriella Celeste by phone or at gceleste@jjpl.org. In addition, JJPL is exploring the development of multi-day, annual skills-building refresher seminar for juvenile defenders.
- Outreach & Advocacy. JJPL works on several fronts to educate the public about the challenges and opportunities facing juvenile defenders. Highlighting the findings and recommendations in The Children Left Behind report is central to our public outreach. While increasing resources for juvenile public defenders is a core facet of overall indigent defense reform, JJPL is also working to develop and implement standards of practice and create professional development opportunities so that overall culture of the juvenile defense bar can be strengthened. If you are interested in assisting in these efforts, please contact Gabriella Celeste by phone or at gceleste@jjpl.org.
